Target’s blank listing simply states ‘Bethesda - Game of Thrones’ with no context. The retail chain has become somewhat infamous for prematurely posting its product pages, with items like Middle-earth: Shadow of War and the gold-covered PlayStation 4 both being unintentionally revealed by Target before their respective announcements.
Bethesda had once been offered the chance to make a Westeros-based game back in 2011, but the studio ‘refused the call’ so that it could focus on Skyrim instead. Now, 6 years later, the time might just be right for Bethesda to tackle the project, which Tim Howard had admitted was very tempting.
Bethesda representative Pete Hines had previously confirmed that Bethesda was working on two huge, large-scale projects that would compare with Skyrim and Fallout in terms of size, and Game of Thrones would certainly provide enough subject matter to fit the bill. If the game is based on roughly the same time as the show itself, it wouldn’t even be the first time Sean Bean (Eddard Stark) has worked with Besthesda: he voiced Martin Septim in The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, where he proved he had chops as a voice actor.
This potentially upcoming game isn’t the only option fans have to get their Game of Thrones fix in the gaming world; Telltale Games has already put out a full season of story-based Game of Thrones content, complete with many of the HBO show’s actors retaining their roles. It’s not currently known whether Besthesda’s potential game would be based around the HBO adaptation or the original books themselves, though one has to imagine it would be the former.
Of course, this is pure speculation based on a Target listing that has provided no context for the time being. With the season finale of Game of Thrones poised to air tonight, one has to imagine that the best time to announce such a game - if it were to be done - would be within the next few days.
