In 2021, Square Enix announced Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, a series of remasters and re-releases of the classic mainline Final Fantasy games up to Final Fantasy 6. These remasters would include fully remade visuals, new quality of life features, and even entirely new, rearranged music for each of the titles. The Pixel Remaster releases began with the release of Final Fantasy on PC and mobile on July 2021, and concluded with the release of Final Fantasy 6 on the same platforms in February 2022.

The biggest question on the minds of most Final Fantasy fans were why Square Enix had not yet decided to bring the titles to platforms like Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 4. Thankfully, it appears that these versions just needed extra work, as the ESRB has leaked listings for the Pixel Remaster versions of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy 2, Final Fantasy 3, Final Fantasy 4, Final Fantasy 5, and Final Fantasy 6 for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. This listing appears to imply that not only are these games coming to Nintendo and Sony’s platforms, but that their release is imminent.
This listing also implies that like on PC and mobile, fans will have to purchase each title individually as opposed to as part of a Final Fantasy collection, however a bundle will likely also be available for purchase. What this means for a physical edition remains to be seen.
For many of these games, this is their first time appearing on modern platforms in many years. As of right now, the PlayStation Vita remains the only way to play Final Fantasy 1 to Final Fantasy 10 on modern consoles, which is really saying something. The release of these remasters on consoles will finally help make the titles available to fans whose entry to the Final Fantasy universe could have been through one of the more recent titles like Final Fantasy 15 or Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
