Although most that were around in the early 2000s probably already know this, Neopets is a web-based game in which players own virtual pets. In exploring the world of Neopia, they can play minigames to earn Neopoints, train their Neopets to compete in competitions, chat with other players, and more.

Due to the hushed nature of the rumor, it’s unclear exactly what kind of game this would be. Since the interview was about the end of Flash and how those Flash games are going to survive, many think Lord was referring to a direct port, bringing over everything from the web version to the Nintendo Switch. Although it sounds bizarre, the more players think about it the more the game seems like a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch. The biggest challenge would likely be adapting the numerous mini games to Nintendo Switch controls.
Another possibility is that Lord was referring to the Neopets brand rather than the website itself, and that this rumored Nintendo Switch game is set in the world of Neopia. This wouldn’t be the first spin off Neopets game, as super fans will likely remember 2005’s Neopets: The Darkest Faerie. This game provided players with RPG systems and an open world in which players actually played a Neopet rather than owning one as a pet. A more modern take of a game like this that lets players choose their Neopet could actually be really fun.
Ultimately, all of this is based on rumors from that interview, so players shouldn’t take any of it as fact. If there is a Neopets game on Nintendo Switch revealed soon, it will surely ignite the fire in the hearts of ’90s kids all around the world. It may also inspire some players to check on their Neopets again, as they likely haven’t eaten in years.
Neopets is available on PC.
