Sure, they confirmed that Super Smash Bros. and Pikmin 3 would be releasing on the Wii U, but they didn’t confirm any new details about the titles - or even show a single screenshot. That’s why it’s very interesting to hear Nintendo video game designer, Katsuya Eguchi, talk about about some possible details on a Metroid game on the Wii U.

During Kotaku’s recent interview with Eguchi, he mentioned how great games like Zelda, Metroid, and Star Fox would look running on the Wii U. Surprisingly, Eguchi even went so far as to say that he’s “sure” there will be a new Metroid title on the new console.

It’s not shocking to hear that there will be a new Metroid game on the Wii U - it’s expected to be at some point. Hopefully the information that Eguchi mentioned isn’t just wishful thinking, because if those are actual details then that means that the game is likely already in development. Metroid seems like a perfect fit for the Wii U, and it’s easy to assume that Nintendo sees the potential in the new controller too. The Battle Mii tech demo that we played during our hands-on time with the Wii U even featured a ton of Metroid cameos, so the franchise is clearly on Nintendo’s mind.

Not much is known about any of the Wii U’s software, but Retro Studios has mentioned that they are hard at work on a Wii U game and they seem likely culprits for developing a new Metroid. Nintendo’s next-gen console is currently slated to hit at some point next year, so word will get out on what games we should expect to be playing on the Wii U sooner rather than later.

Would a new Metroid encourage you to buy a Wii U? Do you think Metroid is currently under development for Nintendo’s new console?
