The latest rumor comes from The Last of Us 2 subreddit where a user by the name of TheTom8 suggests that the game is set to not only release next year, but Sony is lining it up to be a visual showpiece for the PlayStation 5. As a launch title for the PS5, the game will have a new engine and dynamic lighting, featuring cutscenes that are indistinguishable from the gameplay. In addition, facial expressions and polygons have also reached four times the complexity of the studios last game, Uncharted: Lost Legacy. Ultimately, the goal is to make it feel more like an interactive movie than just a game.

However, TheTom8 also goes on to say that The Last of Us 2 is still going to launch on the PlayStation 4 for fans who don’t want to have to upgrade to a brand new console in order to play it. This does line up with a comment Sony made earlier this year, basically shutting down a PS5 exclusive rumor that had popped up. No further details were provided in terms of when it would be launching for the PS4 or how it would be different from its next-generation counterpart, but it should still look fantastic.

It’s worth noting that TheTom8 isn’t an industry insider, only admitting that his information comes second hand from his discussions with sources that are in touch with Sony and Naughty Dog insiders. While there’s a good portion of the information that aligns with other rumors The Last of Us 2 has seen in the past, fans are advised to take the news with a grain of salt.

Rumors indicating that The Last of Us 2 could be a cross-platform game shouldn’t be too surprising considering most of the remaining first-party PS4 releases like Ghost of Tsushima and Death Stranding have seen similar discussion. While things remain a bit unclear for Death Stranding, Hideo Kojima recently posted a picture of himself posing in front of a poster at GamesCom 2019 which does feature the PS4 exclusive label for his latest game.

The Last of Us 2 is a PS4 exclusive and has no currently announced official release window.
