The DC character of Constantine has had his own movie and been a member of the ever-changing group of heroes on CW’s Legends of Tomorrow. Matt Ryan, who played the man on Legends of Tomorrow, did leave the show before the series came to an end, and some thought that’s because he was going to take on the role on HBO Max as well. However, now it looks like John Constantine is going to be recast a third time.

As the man who appears to be the frontrunner for the new John Constantine, Dirisu recently shared one fan’s reaction to the news that Dirisu might be the first person of color to play Constantine on Twitter, and that fan was very unhappy with the idea. The tweet showed a screenshot of a message that the fan sent him, and it was short and to the point, as it read, “stay away from Constantine,” there was then another message after the first, “I hate you.” Alongside the screenshot, Dirisu added in the caption that someone had very strong opinions.
For his part, Dirisu has not said that he is actually following in the footsteps of Keanu Reeves and Matt Ryan. While he would be the first Black incantation of the popular magic-wielding character, it would not be the first time that Constantine has appeared on-screen looking quite a bit different than what comic book and graphic novel fans might have expected. While John Constantine was the version of the magician who appeared in Neil Gaiman’s graphic novels, it’s Johanna Constantine who made an appearance in the Netflix Sandman series in the form of Jenna Coleman.
It’s possible that even with the over-the-top reaction of the one fan on Twitter, Coleman has helped lay the groundwork for Constantine to have a main character who looks a little bit different than people might have expected on the HBO Max reboot series. Of course, time will tell if Dirisu is really playing the role in the first place.
Constantine is in development at HBO Max.
