Real Madrid rekindled its long-standing interest in Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger before eventually putting its faith in Zinedine Zidane, according to the Daily Mail.
Having taken the decision to part with Rafa Benitez in January, Los Blancos were quick to draw up a list of potential long-term successors.
Wenger figured prominently in their thoughts, with the Frenchman having been a target of the Liga outfit for many years.
Real was, however, to appoint club legend Zidane on a temporary basis and ultimately handed him a full-time post after tasting 2015-16 Champions League glory.
The Mail claims that Wenger was aware of the interest being shown in his services, but he has always remained loyal to Arsenal and continues to offer no indication that he is ready to walk away from the Gunners.
